Whether it's your first time or 100th time, we are looking for excited volunteers to make the Summer Games happen...come support our athletes and catch Special Olympics DC spirit!
Are you ready for DC's most inclusive sporting week, the Special Olympics DC Summer Games?! We still need more volunteers at Catholic University May 20-24th!
We are excited to have our community together at the 2024 Summer Games as our athletes show off their determination, indomitable spirit, and skills they've built all season. Here's our scouting report for the week:
Look out for Dream Teams of volunteers from all around the DMV, both new and seasoned...
...LOTS of high-fives...
...Unified teams like Woodson High School Soccer looking to defend their title...
...Dozens of awards ceremonies for hundreds of athletes, with no shortage of excitement and joy!
Over 100 teachers, aides, administrators, and support staff from over 40 DC schools make Special Olympics in-school and out-of-school programming possible in the District. Year round, our teachers get it done, and carve out opportunities for their students to succeed! We appreciate you! You don't need to hear it from us...Listen to our Special Olympics DC youth talk about their favorite teachers!
This Week in Kingston, Jamaica...
SODC is on the second leg of our Unified Youth Exchange with Special Olympics Jamaica, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Sports Diplomacy Department. Eight H.D. Woodson High School students, their teachers, and SODC staff are taking part in this amazing exchange of culture, sport, and fun. We are so excited to be creating international connections through inclusive sport.
In the second year of DC's College Unified Basketball League, connections were made and friendships built!
Students from Howard, Catholic, and American University Special Olympics Clubs, plus the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences Special Olympics Club joined teams of adult Special Olympics DC athletes. Our seasoned adult athletes showed the new Unified Partners the ropes, and within no time it was a competitive, joyful, and memorable experience. We can't wait 'til our college friends are back for more Unified fun in the fall!
The EmpowerFit Adult Fitness Program wrapped up eight weeks of fitness and fun at Trinity Washington University! An important part of staying healthy and ready to compete at your best is paying attention to wellness, flexibility, and nutrition! Here are some health tips from our EmpowerFit expert volunteers:
“Consistency. Consistent movement is the key to reaching your fitness goals and staying healthy.”
- Tucker, Personal Trainer from Focus Integrated Fitness
“Be present in your mind while you move breathe and exercise.”
- Olivia, Trinity Washington University Occupational Therapist Assistant Professor and Yoga Instructor
